With the democratisation of ultra-book and ultra-portable computers, although more and more powerful, are being equipped with fewer and fewer ports to connect devices and peripherals. Indeed, some have a single USB-C port or even two.
The reception stations are excellent solutions to this situation as they allow to extend the connectivity of laptops using only a computer port.
For example, a docking station connected to a single port will allow you to connect for load, data transfer, display, sound, network, etc. However, among the large market pool of products, it is essential to have certain indicators in mind in order to determine the reception station meeting the specific needs of each user. This will make it possible to select the ideal reception station at the right price.
I. WHAT IS YOUR COMPUTER'S CONNECTIVITY?
Traditionally, a docking station connects to a computer USB port. The first thing to do is to determine on which type of port will be connected the docking station. Is it a USB-A port or a USB-C port?
II. HOW WOULD YOU USE YOUR STATION?
A reception station can be used in several situations. In roaming, on the road or on a customer appointment to connect a mouse and other devices? Sedentary in your office to connect your entire work ecosystem?
Mobile docking stations are generally compact and lightweight, allowing them to be easily slipped into a bag, and they have an optimised number of ports for travelling needs. They are also self-powered via the USB port of the computer allowing the user to do without a power adapter.
Office reception stations, which are generally more powerful, are designed to enable users to connect all their computer devices and accessories in order to have equipment adapted to their daily needs. These host stations offer features ranging from essential to very advanced technologies. They are ideal for employees and office managers who need an advanced workstation to complete their daily tasks.
III. HOW SUPPLEMENTARY DO YOU WANT TO BE?
Each trade and user has his/her preferences and uses of work. Some will prefer not to burden too many additional screens when others will equip their desktop with more than 3 screens.
The important question to select its docking station is therefore whether you want to work on a single screen or multiple screen. In fact, it is mainly on the basis of this characteristic that the price level of a reception station is determined.

The second important notion that also depends on your use and equipment is the screen resolution you want to have. The requirements may vary depending on the position you hold. A graphic designer will certainly need a display in the highest resolution possible while an accountant will probably settle for a full HD resolution.
Here is a quick explanation of the various screen resolutions:
IV. WHAT SYSTEM DO YOU WORK ON?
The issue of the operating system arises mainly when using the host station on multiple screens. Indeed, screens on Windows®, Linux® and Chrome OSTM do not manage in the same way as on macOS®
On Windows®, Linux® and Chrome OSTM, installing additional drivers is usually not necessary for multiple screen management and these will support mirror or extended display of multiple screens simultaneously.
However, on macOS®, the installation of drivers for multiple screen management (DisplayLinkTM or Silicon MotionTM) is most often recommended, see required. If the computer AND the docking station are already equipped with ThunderboltTM technology, then driver installation is not required.
